Today's interest... last summer/fall I filmed Paul Val at 9 of his gigs around Austin, "Live Music Capital of the World." Why? I noticed him a decade ago (he was/is gorgeous). But I also noticed he was REALLY really really GOOD. So, last June, I saw in my news stream that he had a gig at a place called, "The Continental Club," in downtown Austin, well over the bridge, on South Congress. I have been filming local professional Austin musicians for, wow, a really long time now, since 2012. Before that, I did practically the same thing in Orlando, before that, Nashville and Chapelgate. So, I had been to "The Continental Club" once or twice, due to its local prestigious reputation but it's in a part of town I don't usually go to. For one thing, I never actually made it in because I wasn't smart enough to figure out how to park my big full size van I love, "Swan," or else they weren't smart enough to know that there are some people in Austin who actually gave it it's local reputation, lol, look that up. So, I went but I didn't see Paul, and I went home.
The next weekend, I noticed, he was performing at another venue I'd never been to on South Congress, a place called C-Boy's. So, after using Google maps to check out parking, I went. I filmed him. I'm sort-of over the top, if you know me at all. I don't mean to be. It's just that some of us actually gave Austin it's local reputation, look that up, lol. So, even though my plan (I wrote about this) was to go in alone, quietly, observing, not being noticed, keeping to myself, like I usually do ("Texas Tales from a LONE Star") I also did what I normally do and stood out. I stood out simply because I'm me and my personality results in that. For example, I'm pretty. So, guys notice me. Can't help it, don't try to be. I had on blue jeans, flip-flops, and a black "Dinner with Dreamers" Cruise t-shirt (well the logo was very small and discrete.) But, I'm also pretty. T-shirt, intentions, quietness, or not. I'm also nice. So, I smile. I'm also curious. So I noticed other guy's cameras as they were filming Paul, I tried to see what kind of camera(s) they had, and when they noticed, I smiled sweetly. That's really all it takes in that environment. But I held them off and moved sweetly away from them to the other side of the room. But of course I need the best view of Paul for my filming's sake. So, I'm about as close as they allow you to get, discretely, just in a booth, but in this case the booth with the band's equipment (well, no one was sitting there and it's right by the stage, I had a good view.) So, you get the picture. By the end of the night Paul and I were having conversations and by the end of the next time I did this (I did it 9 times over the summer/fall) he recognized me coming in the door. By the end of the 5th gig, Paul was so comfortable with me and knew me so well that he could quietly signal me to come in for a close-up while he soloed. He knew there was a good chance what I filmed would wind up on Austin Public television. It did. See.
Anyway, I've now submitted 3 30 minute episodes of Paul and it has been shown a total of 4 1/2 hours throughout Central Texas. That was all from that very first gig. So, that means I have 8 more gigs worth of filming Paul. Did I say I rarely put down my camera throughout the night. Well, I'm there to quietly, discretely film. And I do.
So, what's next? I think I'll go make some more episodes of Paul. Stay tuned. He's awesome. xo
