Today's interest, songwriting, venues, and music publishers, what's at stake...
I'd shift the responsibility for "bringing in a crowd" back to the venue and maybe even to the music publishers. The artist has the responsibility for creating authentic "songs" written from real life experiences and values. That's really what's been taken from everyone through the corporate manipulations for power. When they hold the power of money then they also hold the power of creativity which boils down to forcing artists to bow to whatever agenda is popular or being advanced nationally. That hurts everyone. I write my own songs, what I want to say, and don't accept money. That gives me the power of control. I have to finance it myself, which limits my reach. But the songs are true songs, not commercials or public relations or what some higher agency decides I'm going to say. That's where the power struggle is. I shouldn't have to finance my own songs in order to write what I decide I want to write. That boils down to character. So what is really at stake is the heart of the nation and the direction it's going. Texas is famous for that independent spirit. Bless everything you've done for us all.
